An FMEA can be described as a systematic group of activities intended to:

- Recognize and evaluate  the potential failure of a  product/process and the effects of that failure

-Identify actions that could eliminate or reduce the chance of the potential failure occuring

-Document the entire process

It is complementary to the process of defining what a design or process must do to satisfy the customer.

There are two types if FMEA

-Design FMEA

-Process FMEA

There are 3 basic cases for which FMEA's are generated:

case1: New design, new technology or new process

case2: Modifications to existing design or process

case3: Use of existing design or process in a new environment
